Holden Caulfield - The protagonist and apologueteller of the wise. When the novel opens, Holden is a 16 year-old junior at a school called Pencey Prep; he has just been expelled for academic failure. Holden is ingenious and sensitive, but he narrates his story in a cynical, drop voice. Though he neer says so outright, he longs to subsist in a handsome and innocent world, and finds the hypocrisy and repulsiveness of the world around him approximately unbearably painful; his cynicism is his puddle to protect himself from the pain and letdown of the adult world.
